Reports from the border over the last few weeks have revealed that hundreds of detained immigrants are being sent to jails all the way in New York. This is the first time ever that the United States is sending border crossers to other cities in the country for processing. In fact, Politico has reported that more than 3,000 immigrants are being transported each week from southern Texas and Arizona to other locations in the U.S.
A spokesperson for ICE said that 235 individuals were transferred to three jails in Bergen, Hudson, and Orange Counties. They will be detained there until their federal court hearings. While border-crossings continue to increase each month, the Trump administration has taken aggressive steps to address what they are calling an "emergency crisis" at the southern border. Transferring detained migrants to facilities in other states is just the latest attempt in the President’s strategy to cut the numbers of people seeking asylum.
Jennifer Williams of the Legal Aid Society said the agencies explanations and latest policies are nothing more than a "propaganda campaign" designed to support President Donald Trump's attempts to crackdown on asylum seekers coming to the U.S. border to legally turn themselves over. "It's all manipulation so they can point to their numbers and crank the deportation machine,” said Williams.
