What the Looming DACA Renewal Deadline Means for You

The renewal deadline for recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program will not be extended beyond Oct. 5, according to a Justice Department attorney. The Trump administration announced in September that they were putting an end to DACA, which protects people who entered the country illegally as children.

While the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has stopped accepting new DACA applications, existing recipients with permits that expire on or before March 5, 2018 are still eligible for renewal, as long as they submit their applications by Oct. 5, 2017.

Below, you can find out if and how you can renew your DACA status.

Who Can Renew

You may request a DACA renewal if:

  • Your benefits expire between Sept. 5, 2017, and March 5, 2018
  • You did not depart the U.S. on or after Aug. 15, 2012, without advance parole
  • You have continuously lived in the U.S. since you submitted your most recent DACA request that was approved
  • You have not been convicted of a felony, a significant misdemeanor, or three or more misdemeanors

How to Renew

If you are an existing DACA recipient and you meet all of the requirements above, this is how you can renew your application before Oct. 5, 2017:

  1. Complete and sign:
    1. Form I-821D, Consideration of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals
    2. Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization
    3. Form I-765W Worksheet (PDF, 235 KB)
  1. Follow the instructions on all three forms and submit them to the USCIS, along with the correct fees.

USCIS may request additional documents to verify information from the forms. They may also reach out to your home country’s government, former and current schools and former and current employers.
